At a time like this in the world's history, when evil claims to be increasingly aggressive and seeks to mesmerize mankind by fear and a sense of helplessness, it is wise, as it is at all times, to turn to the Bible, the Word of God, for comfort and guidance.
It is of particular interest and value for us to refresh our memory in regard to the story of David and Goliath, as told in the seventeenth chapter of I Samuel. The Philistines, as well as Goliath himself, had placed complete reliance on his material armor, great size, and physical strength. The story emphasizes his stature, the helmet of brass upon his head, the weight of his coat, and the size of his spear. He defied the armies of Israel and challenged them to send a man to fight with him. The soldiers of Israel were afraid.
At this time David, a young boy, presented himself before the king and said, "Let no man's heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine." As David neared the boastful and arrogant giant he said, "Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied." Suffice it to say, the belief in material power, as typified by Goliath of Gath, went down to defeat in that hour. We should not overlook the fact that David took the necessary human footsteps in gaining this victory.
