Christianly scientific thought and action can assuredly supply the protection which is needed under any conditions, but they can do far more than this. As experience continually shows, they can annul the threatening evil. They enable one to "be not overcome of evil," but they also enable him, in accordance with the rest of the Scriptural admonition, to "overcome evil with good."
The basis of all such thought and action, it is to be remembered, is the absolute allness of God, good, and the consequent nothingness of evil. These are the two great facts which are continually proved in the practice of Christian Science. They are proved in the healing of disease, its disappearance serving as evidence of its nothingness. They have likewise been proved times without number in the overcoming of lack, sorrow, fear, hate, strife, and the like. And the same facts, Christian Science clearly shows, may be demonstrated in the elimination of every appearance of evil, small or great.
The specific method of such demonstration is indicated by Mary Baker Eddy, the revered Leader of Christian Scientists, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," where she writes (p. 233), "The counter fact relative to any disease is required to cure it." Elsewhere in her writings she makes it abundantly plain that the spiritual counter fact relative to any other kind of trouble is what is required to cure it. Evil in any form, no matter how substantial or persistent it may have seemed, is never an actuality. It is never included in the allness of God, and is therefore always illusion, which seems real only to the darkened state of human consciousness which accepts the testimony of the material senses as valid. As the spiritual truth relative to any discordant material appearance dawns in that so-called consciousness, the illusory appearance lessens and, when the truth is clearly enough realized, disappears.
