ON HOLDING UP OUR HANDS

From the January 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It is recorded in the seventeenth chapter of Exodus that at one time, when the armies of Israel were engaged in battle with the armies of the Amalekites, Moses "went up to the top of the hill" to pray to the Almighty for the victory of the armies of Israel. "And it came to pass," the story relates, "when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed." "But," continues the story, "Moses' hands were heavy."

Aaron and Hur, therefore, realizing the help Moses needed, went up to him, and one on the right, the other on the left, held up Moses' hands until final victory was assured. In this instance the united spiritual efforts of three divinely inspired men were necessary in order to bring forth the desired result—victory in battle for the armies of Israel.

Of this great spiritual leader, Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 200), "Moses advanced a nation to the worship of God in Spirit instead of matter, and illustrated the grand human capacities of being bestowed by immortal Mind." Yet in his prayers for the armies of Israel even this great man of God needed the help of two of his closest coworkers, and this united effort resulted finally in the complete demonstration.
