The sense of mortal existence continually places one in situations of bewilderment and confusion. Either there is a surfeit of things, friends, and money, or there is a lack of things, friends, and opportunity so extreme that one is sometimes driven to a state of self-pity, discouragement, and loneliness. A sense of loss and separation always indicates that one is reasoning from a merely material sense of life and relationship.
Mary Baker Eddy, a woman deeply consecrated to God, recognizing humanity's need, devoted her life to meeting that need. In 1875 she enlightened human thinking by giving to the world the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Today, in the midst of world confusion, if one would gain the right answers to present problems, he is urged to turn unreservedly to the Bible and to Science and Health. Here he may find the true and spiritual explanation of life, man, and the universe—the Science of Life.
In the Scriptures we find these unequivocal statements: "In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth." "All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life." Answering the question, "What is Life?" Mrs. Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 468), "Life is divine Principle, Mind, Soul, Spirit." And she states (ibid., p. 522), "Existence, separate from divinity, Science explains as impossible."
