SPIRITUAL REFRESHMENT FOR THE FORCES

From the January 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The loving guidance and tender care of the shepherd for the flock are set forth in many Bible stories and verses. The great Master chose the same figure to illustrate some of his most important teachings: "I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine. . . . And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice." Mary Baker Eddy, in a message to The Mother Church (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 322) writes, "Your dual and impersonal pastor, the Bible, and 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,' is with you; and the Life these give, the Truth they illustrate, the Love they demonstrate, is the great Shepherd that feedeth my flock, and leadeth them 'beside the still waters.'"

At this time of mental unrest and upheaval in the routine of human lives comes the great opportunity for Christian Scientists to reach out farther than ever before and give of the rich fruits they have reaped in quieter years. Today men and women are answering their countries' call far away from home and friends, and Christian Scientists who have been blessed by the shelter of the Sunday school and by happy church activities are now living in unaccustomed surroundings and in strange company. The broader sense of Church lies before us, and we are called upon to take the bread of Truth and feed the lambs of the flock, as well as sustain those who have already experienced its many blessings.

Deep in the human heart is the desire for right doing, honest living, and mental peace; but the surge of evil abroad today causes many a struggle in that heart and would tempt with worldly attractions those whose feet are not firmly set on the true path.
