CHURCH FIRST

From the January 1944 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The First Church of Christ, Scientist, as established by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, contains within it all that is thought of as the Christian Science movement.

The divine concept of Church, in its appearing, embraces and promotes all the activity of Christian Science. There is no Christian Science separate from or separated from His Church. This Church is not confined to a building in any certain city or cities. It is not geographical, is not anywhere localized. Church exists and expresses itself in the spiritual understanding which practices the teaching of Christian Science. Church appears wherever Christian Science is loved and lived.

This is evident in the definition of "Church" given on page 583 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. It reads: "Church. The structure of Truth and Love; whatever rests upon and proceeds from divine Principle.
