In the years during which Mary Baker Eddy was seeking and finding Truth, great revival meetings were being held in this country. Preachers were striving to awaken their congregations to the subtle nature of sin, and were urging a return to godliness and religious fervor. Today mankind is again being driven Spiritward by the mounting tides of a yearning for happier and more peaceful ways, and once more religious revival meetings are common.
In these upheavals of human thought, Christian Scientists recognize the signs of the breaking up of material beliefs and the overturning of observances held closely to the letter to make way for a revival of the spirit of Christianity. Christian Science itself implies revival; it means restoration and regeneration. It affirms that religion has not failed; the failure has been that we have not had enough of it, nor have we had a correct concept of the basis of the master Christian's profound teachings and practices, namely, the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil.
Have you in recent times felt a great stir going on? Have you thought that this chemicalization was peculiarly yours, or perhaps the special experience of your branch church? Let us not be deceived. Many are hearing the divine command to go forward, and the brutality, confusion, and fears which the world calls war are but the symptoms of mortal mind's opposition to this command, portending perhaps another Red Sea experience, another wilderness, and, if so, another promised land of peace. The revival is universal. Once before, mankind came to the land of promise, and turned back into the wilderness, but there it learned a much-needed lesson.
