From the May 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am grateful to God for the good that has come into my experience through the study of Christian Science. I realize that it has given me years of active, joyous living which would otherwise have been impossible.

I had a normal and happy boyhood until I reached the age of fourteen, when my father suddenly passed on. Within a few weeks everything had changed. Our income practically disappeared, we had to sell many possessions, I had to leave school, and then I became paralyzed. I went into a hospital for medical treatment, and, although I must pay tribute to the care and attention I received, at the end of two years, after undergoing several operations, I was pronounced incurable. I was told that since I had no private income it would be wise to make application for admittance to a home for incurables.

I felt very unhappy, because it seemed to me as if my enjoyment of life was being cut off right at the start. Trying to find some comfort I read in the Bible (Mark 16:17, 18), "These signs shall follow them that believe; ... they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." As I thought about this I remembered that I had been told that Christian Science was a healing religion, and I wondered if I could receive any help from it.
