THE WAY OF PEACE

From the May 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The way of peace was made clear by Christ Jesus. Heralded as the Prince of Peace centuries before he appeared humanly, he fully demonstrated through his mighty ministry his right to this exalted title, for he came preaching and proving the gospel of peace and of brotherly love.

The stilling of the storm on Galilee, the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, and the rebuking of Peter's impetuosity in the garden of Gethsemane are but a few of the many examples in the Scriptures of the peace-bringing power the Master exercised over all forms of error. But though he thus showed his divine authority with healing effect, he well knew that true peace consists of much more than anything these events could indicate. The mortal thought of that day beheld these outward phenomena, but their spiritual significance it could not discern.

Peace is not merely the absence of the discordant and superficial; it is the presence of the harmonious and fundamental. It is not negative; it is positive. It is not passive; it is active. It is not, in reality, a human or material phenomenon; it is a spiritual fact. It cannot be experienced without if it is not cherished within. Emerson discerned something of this when he said: "Nothing can bring you peace but yourself. Nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles." Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, beheld the spiritual basis of peace when she wrote(The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 279): "God is the divine Mind. Hence the sequence: Had all peoples one Mind, peace would reign."
