SPIRITUAL KNOWING VERSUS HUMAN PLANNING

From the July 1945 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN the midst of vast postwar planning, statesmen and businessmen alike are asking, "Which way shall we follow?" The businessman, concerned with the survival of enterprise and future progress, earnestly seeks a way which will enable him to produce marketable products, the sale of which will ultimate in satisfactory earnings for both employer and employee. The statesman is in search of the way that will ensure an impartial and everlasting peace with an abundance of opportunities for all nations and peoples to achieve self-sufficiency. To this end, statesmen and businessmen, gathering daily in their respective conferences, approach the problem with patience and caution. Diligent effort is being put forth that motives may be revealed, purposes honestly construed, and a firm basis for mutual understanding established, since upon the outcome of these group gatherings will hinge, to a large extent, our future status as workers or citizens. The hue and cry of the time is for the setting up of standards of conduct which can be successfully followed by all nations and peoples in their relations with each other.

Prayerfully pondering the seriousness of present-day events, the earnest student of Christian Science is urged on to renewed mental activity. Judging from what the world has had to contend with during the past decade, has it not become quite obvious that the need is urgent for an uplifting of thought above and beyond the realm of human planning and conjecture, if we would perceive the way applicable to the solution of business, political, or social problems? Envy, hatred, race prejudice, greed, jealousy, covetousness, and personal aggrandizement must be ruled out of thought and motive if we are to evolve a workable solution to existing problems.

The failure of men to progress because of erroneous planning based upon human conjecture can be traced as far back as history records itself. Contrariwise, the record is replete with testimony of rapid progress as the thought of mankind has become spiritualized. In the face of these historical facts, does it not behoove all of us to plumb the depths of Jesus' teachings and find the master plan for the overcoming of all discord and inharmony? Through daily demonstration, the Master proved the power of spiritual knowing, and because he proved his faith by his works, his means and methods have stood out through the ages as the example for all.
