For a long time it has been my sincere desire to submit a testimony expressing gratitude for Christian Science. First, I am profoundly grateful for having had Christian Science all my life. This afforded me great protection, when a child, from the so-called children's diseases.
When I was six, the third and fourth fingers on my left hand were crushed when a heavy apartment house door slammed on them. Frightened, I ran screaming to my mother, who quietly and audibly declared the truth. The little finger was practically severed just below the first joint; the bones were splintered and protruding. My mother put the end of the finger in place, gently molded both fingers back into shape and bandaged them. I was admonished not to show anyone my hand or discuss with anyone what had taken place.
While my mother was bandaging the hand, I kept declaring over and over, "It's going to be crooked." This was denied by my mother's counterdeclaration (Isa. 40:4, 5): "Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it."
