I am sending this testimony as payment on a debt long overdue.
I took up the study of Christian Science in the spring of 1918, because of the health of my family and myself. A daughter seven years old had bad tonsils, and during her two years of school had missed from one to ten days every month. The attacks of tonsillitis stopped almost immediately, and she went to school several years without missing a day. Another daughter was healed of typhoid fever in a week's time, with the help of a practitioner.
At one time my two oldest girls, with two others of the same age and accompanied by a young woman, went on a fishing trip, expecting to stay until dark. About seven o'clock in the evening I saw a very black cloud coming, and the girls were right in the path of it. I knew they would not see it until it was right over them, because they were under a high bank. For a moment I was panicky; then I thought I must help them, but how? Just then the three-year-old daughter said, "Mamma, let's sing, 'How gentle God's commands.'" As I finished the words of the first verse, the words of the second verse flashed through my mind (Hymnal, No. 124):
