I wish to give thanks for the Christian Science Hymnal. We are indeed blessed in having this golden treasury of song and verse, with each hymn so carefully selected, and chosen for its uplifting message. All the healings I have had through singing or through clinging to the hymns are too numerous for me to remember, but one or two stand out like beacons.
One day, while serving as a policewoman in a small town and patrolling a main thoroughfare, I was thinking about God, when I heard angry voices. About one hundred yards ahead I saw a group of soldiers of another nationality outside a tavern. They appeared to be the worse for drink, and were very angry. There had been one or two unpleasant incidents in the town since these soldiers began to arrive and I had to think quickly. I glanced at the side street I was crossing, for instinctively the suggestion had come that I could easily turn into it and avoid any incident, but I realized that this would not be right. I knew I must not seem to hesitate so I continued on toward the men, lifting my thought to God. The words of Hymn 202 came to me,
The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking,
unloosing bonds of all captivity.
