I am a Christian Scientist because I have...

From the June 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am a Christian Scientist because I have proved for myself, beyond any shadow of doubt, that this Science solves every problem confronting mankind, be its nature physical, financial, moral, or mental.

In the very earliest days of my study of this Science I was healed instantaneously of fallen arches. For two years I had been compelled to wear heavy steel supports, and without their continual use I found it impossible to do my work, because it entailed much walking. An acquaintance had given me a Christian Science Sentinel, which I read and reread, and as I did so I found myself accepting without question the concept of God and His ever-presence found in each article and testimony. Here, I realized, was the truth I had sought all my life, and I decided then and there to buy the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, about which I had read so much in the Sentinel. Then I thought, "When I read that book, perhaps God will heal my feet." But in a moment my thought changed, and in my new-found realization of God's ever-presence I cried, "If God can do it then, He can do it now, for He is here now, and error therefore is not here." That was all. I was healed at that moment. I shall never forget my joy and gratitude at finding myself walking and running freely and without pain.

I then purchased the textbook and commenced the earnest study thereof. Healings came quickly. The smoking habit of many years' standing and numerous minor difficulties vanished—and then came a bigger test.
