My desire to study Christian Science came after I had left home and friends and had gone to live in a small new town in the reclaimed desert of the Northwest. My reaching out for something to save me from the pettiness and gossip of a small community resulted in my taking up the study of the Bible, and of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Still vivid in memory is the wonderful realization I had when I attended my first Christian Science church service that the words from I John 3:2, "Now are we the sons of God," are actually true.
Many healings followed. I came safely, almost painlessly, through childbirth, but it took some severe human experiences to arouse me really to study and gain some idea of God and of man in His image and likeness. Then I became a member of The Mother Church and of a branch church. Later I was healed of nervous prostration, but not until impatience, pride, selfishness, intolerance, criticism, and kindred errors were uncovered and eliminated from my thinking.
A great reluctance to spend money for Christian Science treatment was overcome. I found I did not hesitate to pay a considerable amount for new clothing, or for amusement, so I asked myself why I should not be willing to pay for something that was changing the whole course of my life, and bringing untold comfort and happiness into my human relationships?
