OUR DUTIES AND PRIVILEGES

From the June 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Late one Wednesday afternoon a member of a Christian Science branch church entered her home feeling weary and burdened. She had experienced an unusually trying week and thought that it would be too much of an effort to attend church that evening. The temptation was to believe it would do her more good to stay at home and rest.

Then she remembered that when she had joined the church she had assumed the responsibility of regular attendance, and it was her duty to be in her place that night. As a result she made the effort, which previously had appeared too great, and went to church. The selections from the Bible and passages from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as read by the First Reader, brought a sense of peace to the woman. Many testimonies were given in the period set aside for them, and each one expressed joy and gratitude.

As the member started home she found that she was feeling rested and refreshed. She had again demonstrated the truth stated by Mrs. Eddy in the Manual of The Mother Church (Art. XVII, Sect. 1): "A Christian Scientist is not fatigued by prayer, by reading the Scriptures or the Christian Science textbook. Amusement or idleness is weariness. Truth and Love rest the weary and heavy laden."
