IN PRAISE OF PRAISE

From the July 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Praise ye the Lord: for it is good to sing praises unto our God; for it is pleasant; and praise is comely." How pleasant and comely are our lives being made with praise? Praise of good is like sunshine. It warms the heart. It enlightens faith, enriches thought, gives freedom to activity, and beautifies life.

For song and safety come with high thoughts
winging,
And freedom, when the heart ascends to praise.

Praise, like gratitude, should be continuous, because the power and goodness of God, the All-in-all of true being, are continuous and immediate. The effect of praise is practical indeed when that praise recognizes God as Principle, divine Love, and is an acknowledgment of His power. Mary Baker Eddy writes in the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 2), "God is not moved by the breath of praise to do more than He has already done, nor can the infinite do less than bestow all good, since He is unchanging wisdom and Love." Praise, then, is not in the nature of petition but of acknowledgment.
