STAND PORTER!

From the July 1946 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 392): "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously." Standing porter at the door of thought, let us keep the portal clear for the admittance only of angel thoughts.

In Article VIII, Section 6, of the Manual of The Mother Church, Mrs. Eddy admonishes us to defend ourselves daily against aggressive mental suggestion. Many such false suggestions knock at the door of human thought for admittance. In recent times we may have encountered, for instance, suggestions of anxiety and fear for the safety of our loved ones in the service; sorrow and pity for those whose lives and homes, to human sense, have been destroyed; uncertainty regarding the stability of our financial system; doubt as to whether our material resources will be sufficient, and many others. Christian Scientists have been joyously proving, in the measure of their spiritual understanding, that such false suggestions are impostors and need not be admitted into consciousness.

Some years before World War I, the writer was visiting in the home of a British Army officer. The question was asked him, "When will the next war between Germany and England come?" To the remainder of the group present, the question came as a shock, for there had been no evidence of ill will between the two countries. Still, in the questioner's thought, World War I had already started. Long before the recent war had ended, some persons believed and expressed the suggestion that the world was due for another depression in so many years after this war. Let us make sure that we are not helping to bring about either World War III or World Depression II in human experience.
