The pertinency of these lines by James Russell Lowell, as adapted for the Christian Science Hymnal, to the present day should be evident to every student of Christian Science. The end of the recent war has not brought a termination of strife. Phoenix-like, it has sprung up in new forms and in new places. It has arisen between nations and peoples who were formerly friends and allies. It has raised problems relative to the control of new weapons and the limitation of armaments which we had hoped the war's end would eliminate.
The increasing complexities of men's relationships in a world that is rapidly shrinking in size, governed by conflicting ideologies, are causing many to question how peace can be made permanent and the supremacy of good over evil be demonstrated. The way is thus indicated by the same poet:
