GOING HOME

From the September 1947 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Some years ago there appeared in The Atlantic Monthly a charming essay entitled "Home to Him's Muvver," in which the author said that a three years old child always ended her tales of amazing adventures with these words: "An' him went home to him's muvver." This child in her baby way expressed the natural seeking by the human heart for comfort and security from its uncertainties and perplexities.

Students of Christian Science are learning through the inspired teachings of Mary Baker Eddy, who discerned that God is Mother as well as Father, to go home to their Father-Mother God and find rest in the fundamental facts of spiritual being. This is the heart's communion with the one creator, where true comfort is found, true inspiration engendered, and true revelation received. Mrs. Eddy expresses the mental nature of the heart's homing in these words: "Home is not a place. It is a power. Going home is doing right" (Mary Baker Eddy: A Life Size Portrait by Lyman P. Powell, pp. 225, 226). This going home is arriving at the exactness of Truth, the undeviating basis of Principle, the changeless dependability of divine Love, the awareness of Soul, the presence of Mind, the perpetuation of Life, and the substantiality of Spirit.

Great joy attends the anticipation of going home to a beloved place where one greets old friends and views familiar scenes. Often, however, because of changes, one is disappointed in returning to a former dwelling place. This is not so when the heart goes home to the changeless sanctity of Spirit. This going home is the bringing of human thought into accord with the truths of spiritual being. Our true spiritual selfhood never needs to return home, for it is eternally at home with God. Mrs. Eddy says (Unity of Good, p. 61): "Coming and going belong to mortal consciousness. God is 'the same yesterday, and to-day, and forever.'"
