The Beloved Disciple

From the January 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

To John alone that tender name was given.
Was it because he early recognized
The high, pure nature
Of his holy friend?
Was it, perhaps, because John clearly saw
That all the Master's thoughts
Were thoughts of Love?

We read John's record
Of those distant days
When Jesus taught deep lessons
To the twelve.
How wonderful it must have seemed to him—
To Jesus, as he taught that little band—
To have one thought discern
His true intent!
John, whom he loved,
Saw his inspired friend
As the long-looked-for Saviour,
Of mankind—
Saw him express
In every word and deed
Life, truth, and love,
The ever-present qualities Of God.

John knew that there would come
A Comforter.
In our own day that Comforter has come:
In Christian Science we have found the way
To carry out the teachings of the Christ—
To comfort those who mourn,
To heal the sick,
To help men rise above
The shame of sin.

One who like him
Discerned the truths of God
Has brought this holy joy
To all mankind.
Thus is fulfilled
The prophecy of John,
Whom, we are told.
The gentle Master loved.
