Over ten years ago I began the systematic study and practice of Christian Science through a healing experienced as the result of scientific right thinking on the part of a friend, who afterwards became a practitioner. She gave me no treatment, as I had asked for none. We simply conversed in her home, as we had often done before, on the subject of Christian Science. I asked questions and she answered, according to her best understanding. Because I was in need of a physical healing and was receptive to Science, the healing was instantaneous. I had been having medical treatment for many months for exhaustion and weakness. The physician had diagnosed the trouble as low hemoglobin and low blood pressure.
What I had read and heard of Christian Science since girlhood had always appealed to me as being natural and good. "If it isn't true, it ought to be," I had said many times. But being very happy, healthy, and content with life as it was and having a deep love for God and a constant sense of His presence, which my dear mother had taught me from babyhood, I was not inclined to investigate further the Science of Christianity.
During my very sheltered girlhood I had little contact with the aggressive claims of evil. As difficulties presented themselves later in life, I used what I understood of prayer. My chief problem during years of motherhood was to live up to what I knew of God's requirements. I found like Paul (Rom. 7:21) "that, when I would do good, evil [was] present with me."
