GOD'S GIFTS—ABUNDANCE AND AFFLUENCE

From the December 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

ONE of the most profound statements of Jesus was the one made by him to the disciples after they had said to him (Matt. 14:15), "This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves victuals." Jesus' reply, "They need not depart," was supported by his demonstration that God is the abundant source of all supply. Through his understanding of divine Mind's power and provision he produced enough and to spare to feed them all right where they were.

"Out of the amplitude of his pure affection, he defined Love. With the affluence of Truth, he vanquished error," writes Mary Baker Eddy on page 54of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" about this righteous man. In these two sentences we find the Master's method of dispelling every phase of lack for himself and others and his manner of demonstrating man's at-one-ment with God.

He proved beyond any doubt that what God has is man's through divine heritage. He came to give mankind the true sense of Life and substance, and explained his mission by saying (John 10:10), "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." A fuller understanding of this quotation may be gained when the word "life" is exchanged for the other attributes and verities of God. The statement, "I am come that they might have," becomes inexhaustible in its scope when used in this manner. The Christ, Truth, is actively speaking to human consciousness through these words today, declaring God's ever-present abundance with renewed life. It is speaking through the unfoldment of divine Science to each of us somewhat in this manner: I am come that you may have all there is in the way of unlimited good. I am come to restore your God-given substance, intelligence, health, harmony, and immortality. I am come to show you that the affluence of God is at hand. I am come to you that you may be conscious of God, the perpetual source and Giver of all good. I am come that Truth and Love may be better understood and manifested.
