Poems

A new name

From the December 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Jacob wrestled till the break of day,
It was his earthy self that was assailed:
It was his heavenly selfhood that prevailed.
When through his darkness broke the morning ray,
Jacob beheld the spirit where the clay
Was thought to be—and Esau's anger paled.
Jacob beheld such verities unveiled
As neither could be bought nor willed away.

Henceforth, his name was changed to Israel,
His sons were destined for the promised land.
His valiant feet forevermore were set
To heights of Spirit, whence to see and tell
Of Shiloh's coming, and to trace God's hand
From Egypt even unto Olivet.
