RECOGNITION IS HEALING

From the December 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

GOD, good, is at this moment the All-in-all of being. Nothing needs to be done to make this so; nor does anything need to be changed in order that this glorious fact may be apparent. That there seems to be an unprincipled mortal mind, aware of a so-called material existence, animating a man of its own conceiving, is but a dream. The real man is the spiritual idea of divine Mind, God. Proportionately as mankind wakes from the dream to this truth, sin, disease, discord, frustration, fear, sorrow, and death are obliterated from individual experience.

How, one may ask, does this awakening come? It comes through turning away from that which material sense terms reality and recognizing the opposite evidence of the Christ, Truth, the spiritual idea of God. On page 332 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy writes, "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness." The grace of divine Love is such that even when human consciousness seems engulfed in the material dream, the scientific acknowledgment of the truth about God and man can bring healing. However convincing mortal mind's dramatization of supposedly real events, the Christ can always overcome the error. Absolute recognition of the Christ brings release from the false beliefs which would convince one of the reality of any selfhood apart from Love. There is no waiting for this freedom. The moment of spiritual realization is the moment of healing.

One of Jesus' faithful followers found herself one morning apparently witnessing one of the most cruel events ever conceived by mortal mind. True, Mary Magdalene had been healed by the Master; she had learned of the ever-presence of the eternal Christ; her life had been transformed by the divine power of the Word which Jesus taught. But suddenly there came the betrayal, the outrageous trial, the shameful mockery, the crucifixion. Then death appeared to give the final proof that the illusion of life in matter rather than the one Life, Spirit, God, was real.
