In casting about for more tithes to bring into the storehouse, I remembered that I had never given thanks "in the great congregation" of readers of the Christian Science periodicals.
In my early teens I sought an answer to the question, "Why is there no healing today in the manner our Master provided?" I eagerly searched for the answer, but my clerical friends could not give it. I read many books, but there was no answer there. At last, while I did not lose faith in God and knew there was the correct answer somewhere, I ceased going to church, and for fourteen years I did not put foot in a church for the purpose of hearing a sermon. During that time I read much about religion and studied many religious books. But they all stopped far short of the answer I was seeking.
During the so-called influenza epidemic of 1918, a close relative was healed in Christian Science by absent treatment, when she appeared to be passing on. The following spring my wife was healed of a severe nervous breakdown in two weeks, after a physician had said nothing could be done for her and had recommended a rest of six months in a warmer climate. She was suffering from a lesion which had formed in her bowels after an operation, and which caused an obstruction that required constant medicine to give her relief. This condition was completely healed.
