When I was first introduced to Christian Science I was very heavy-hearted, for I was bearing a burden which seemed to grow weightier year by year. As a result of this state of mind, I was also sick in body. A specialist had told me that I should never enjoy good health on account of my tendency to worry about things. Ever since the First World War my husband had had inflammation of the cornea, which recurred every four or five years. The family doctor and two specialists said that this would continue, reducing the sight with each attack, until there was eventually blindness. The fear of this blindness was my burden.
When an attack of this inflammation appeared early in 1938, we turned to Christian Science, having learned that medical science could do nothing to heal the condition. A practitioner explained to us that sight is spiritual perception, which can never be lost. As we glimpsed the truth about God and His perfect reflection, man, the burden rolled away. The fear disappeared, and the healing was manifested.
There has been no recurrence of the trouble, and my husband's sight is good. During the recent war, as a member of the transport platoon of the local Home Guard Battalion, he was called upon to drive a car for long hours in the blackout, over difficult moorland. He was frequently assigned to special night duties because he could see so well in the dark. My husband and I are continually grateful for the work of the practitioner.
In addition to this great blessing, I was healed also. For many years I had taken a variety of medicines for three different functional disorders, but as my fear dissolved, these other troubles disappeared. No specific treatment had been given for my complaints. I threw away all the medicines, and have neither needed nor desired them since.
What a joy it is to be able to testify to this healing truth found in Christian Science! But the richest treasure is the growth in spiritual understanding made possible by the study of the Bible in the light of our Leader's writings. I am also grateful for membership in The Mother Church, for the opportunity of service in a branch church, and for class instruction with its added privilege of the annual association meetings — Oldham, Lancashire, England.
I wish to verify my wife's testimony, and to add my gratitude for the blessings gained through Christian Science.
