Testimonies of Healing

Christ Jesus has promised (Matt. 11: 28-30)...

From the March 1948 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christ Jesus has promised (Matt. 11: 28-30): "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." This promise has constantly unfolded to me during my experience in Christian Science.

Twelve years ago I heard a lecture on Christian Science. It contained the first truthful statements that I had heard about this religion. Before that I had deplored what I thought it to be. I went to the lecture feeling as though I were weighed down with a great load. Though the burden was not lifted during the lecture, the message given seemed so logical and right that I went away wanting to know more. Twice after that I borrowed the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, but I still failed to comprehend its clear message. I became more and more unhappy until I came to the point where I seriously contemplated suicide. About this time I got in contact with a Christian Science practitioner, who pointed out "the scientific statement of being" on page 468 of the textbook and gave my husband and me a Christian Science Quarterly, showing us how to study the Lesson-Sermons contained in it.

The Lesson that week was "Love." How can I be grateful enough for this wonderful Lesson? It literally made me over. My husband had been studying that Lesson for only a couple of days when one evening he started to break out with hives, a condition which had afflicted him at intervals and which lasted for some time. That night when we retired I affirmed the truths in "the scientific statement of being" and pondered other truths I had learned in those few days of study. In the morning there was no trace of hives, and he has never had a return of that difficulty. At last I realized the great power contained in Christian Science, which I had sensed at the lecture heard over a year before.

Healings from then on were the order of the day. The many problems I had had with our baby, which were a constant source of dismay, dropped away one by one. At the end of the first week of study I suddenly realized that I was free from the many nagging ills that had made life such a burden. Previously I had had almost constant headaches and backaches and was always tired. As I look back on the person I seemed to be before the truth reached my consciousness, I can see a faultfinding, hateful, nervous creature. How grateful I am to be rid of these traits and to have found the true path that Christ Jesus came to show us.

Day by day I am realizing more fully what a wonderful woman our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, was, to have worked and labored so unselfishly to make available to all who are ready to receive it this truth that makes one free.

We have had many and daily proofs of the healing, protecting, and directing power of God through our study of Christian Science and through the help of practitioners. We have been healed of influenza, boils, carbuncles, infected wounds, burns, and many ills that we did not know how to name. Many of these healings have been instantaneous, proving the statement in Hebrews (4:12), "The word of God is quick, and powerful." Other healings have been slow, but through them we have gained a greater understanding of God.

It is wonderful to see how even a small understanding of Christian Science brings with it protection, for now we are almost completely free from the many mishaps and accidents that had been a part of our experience before we gained an understanding of Science. Many times we have also been guided to the right place both for our home and our work.

We have had a son born since we began to study Christian Science. It would be difficult to describe how beautiful and joyous an experience this birth was. I was not confined to bed, and in a week I was doing all my own work and caring for the child as well.

During the war, when my husband entered the service, I was able to take his position, which was a technical one in the field of journalism and a type of work not before handled by a woman. Trusting in God gave me the courage and strength to take over the work and to do it. The experience was a wonderful one for my own growth.

I am most grateful to have had class instruction early. Serving in a Christian Science Society has blessed me immeasurably. I am learning too that every phase of the Christian Science movement is blessing not only me and mine, but the whole world. How wonderful it has been to see through Christian Science the fulfilling of the words of the Bible (Rom. 8:28), "All things work together for good to them that love God."—

The experiences which my wife has related and many more have been our blessing and have enriched our lives through the truths taught by our Leader.
