CHRISTIAN SCIENCE reveals the great spiritual fact that God is the only Mind. This is a revolutionary teaching. It is as diametrically opposed to theories of natural science, theology, and medicine as the discoveries of the early physicists were to the theory of a flat, four-cornered earth. The revelation that God is the only Mind refutes the human appearance of many minds, each residing in a brain, and each capable of thinking good or evil at will. Man, divine Science proclaims, is not a mind, but an idea of the one divine Mind. His spiritual selfhood, or individual consciousness, is wholly derived from God and exists only as an inseparable emanation of the one Mind, God.
To the hearkening Moses, God revealed Himself as "I AM," a name assuredly indicating one infinite, conscious individuality, or Mind. Christ Jesus addressed God reverently as "Father," thereby ascribing to Him the conscious individuality of Mind, which knows and cares for His beloved children. The faithful Paul wrote (Phil. 2:5), "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus."
Mary Baker Eddy explains the scientific relation of Mind to its idea, man, in these words (Retrospection and Introspection, p. 56): "All consciousness is Mind, and Mind is God. Hence there is but one Mind; and that one is the infinite good, supplying all Mind by the reflection, not the subdivision, of God. Whatever else claims to be mind, or consciousness, is untrue. The sun sends forth light, but not suns; so God reflects Himself, or Mind, but does not subdivide Mind, or good, into minds, good and evil." And on the next page she adds: "Man shines by borrowed light. He reflects God as his Mind, and this reflection is substance,—the substance of good."
