Not long ago a survey was made of the mottoes or slogans that have been used for many years by a cross section of daily newspapers in the United States and Canada. It discussed some of the best known of these mottoes and commented on their purposes and origins.
Among those discussed was the verse of Scripture which has appeared on the Editorial Page of The Christian Science Monitor since its first issue, "First the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear" (Mark 4:28, American Standard Version).
It is significant that this Bible verse appearing on the Editorial Page should be thus classed among the best-known mottoes used by daily newspapers. But even more significant to Christian Scientists are the source of that verse and the fundamental meaning and purpose to be found in a careful study of its context.
