THE SCIENCE OF HEALTH

From the June 1949 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science brings health within the possibility of everyone's experience, for it reveals God as the source of health, and God is ever available to those who love good. Often, in the language of Christian Science, health is linked with holiness, and since holiness connotes spiritual purity, health is seen to be the mental state that companions freedom from sin. If the good seem to suffer, it is because they do not understand the Science of health, do not know God as the only Mind nor realize that the good they embody can be utilized as a law of destruction to the diseased sensations that beset them.

Health, or wholeness, is the very essence of God's nature, and it is individualized in man, His image. Health is the divine state of thought which is conscious only of the glory and perfection of spiritual being. The senses of man are spiritual, and his sensations are those of spirituality and purity. Through spiritual sense man is conscious of his eternal sonship with God, knows the sublime qualities which make up his individuality, understands his inseparable unity with his Maker, and participates in the God-ordered activities of the real creation.

If one would demonstrate good health, he should awaken to spiritual reality. He should understand God as All—know Him as Love by loving deeply and unselfishly; know Him as Truth by practicing truthfulness; know Him as Spirit by recognizing intelligence, rather than matter, as substance. Furthermore, the demonstration of health entails a consistent denial of the existence of the mortal mentality which seems so evident in human experience and which embraces the flesh and its often unhealthy states. This process of Christianization—knowing divine Mind's allness and the carnal mind's nothingness—proves the nonexistence of fear and evil and the diseased sensations which are rooted in their soil. It discovers spiritual man, who knows only the sensations which Soul imparts.
