Christian Science came into our home when we children were quite small. My mother was awaiting the arrival of another baby, and the doctor informed her that she was in grave danger and that the child could not be born alive. In the small town where we lived was a kind friend, a Christian Scientist, who immediately came to our aid. She gave my mother a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key lo the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. For many years my mother had been searching for a different explanation of God than had been taught to her in the church to which she belonged. She found that she could accept the teachings of Christian Science and devoured the book hungrily. Soon after this the boy was born—alive— and my mother experienced an easy birth. This son served in the Navy during the last war and experienced marvelous protection.
A healing which I experienced and which I remember most vividly occurred during my first visit to a practitioner. On my way to talk with her about a problem which was not a physical one, I was dejected and despondent and very conscious of an ugly scar on my face which I had carried from birth. As I walked into her office, I was conscious of being lifted up. She smiled at me and said, "God created His child in His image—without spot and without blemish." It was not until I arrived home that I understood what she meant. The scar was gone—completely removed—and in over twenty years there has been no return of it.
A more recent experience, which has meant much to my own little family, was the healing of our youngest baby of a clubfoot. The child was examined by a doctor, and the diagnosis and the suggested cure were quite frightening. On the way home from the doctor's office, the verse from Isaiah came to me, "Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness." My husband, who is not a Christian Scientist turned to me and asked if I would like to try Christian Science first.
