Spiritual reasoning leads every clear thinker to the realization that above and entirely apart from the clashing opinions and mental picture presented by the material senses, the law and will of God, divine Principle, is maintaining every detail of true being in harmony and order. The study of Christian Science awakens one to the perception of this unassailable fact. It proclaims the oneness and allness of God's will, and therefore indicates the paramount importance of conforming thereto.
Referring to this, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 33): "When the human element in him struggled with the divine, our great Teacher said: 'Not my will, but Thine, be done!'— that is, Let not the flesh, but the Spirit, be represented in me. This is the new understanding of spiritual Love. It gives all for Christ, or Truth." So in the seeming struggle between sense and Soul everyone will be and is being led, as was Jesus, to let the will of God assert itself supremely as the will of man.
In its mission of redemption, Christian Science uncovers the erroneous nature of human will and its evil influence upon the life and health of mankind. On page 490 of her textbook Mrs. Eddy says: "Human will is an animal propensity, not a faculty of Soul. Hence it cannot govern man aright. Christian Science reveals Truth and Love as the motive-powers of man. Will—blind, stubborn, and headlong—cooperates with appetite and passion. From this cooperation arises its evil. From this also comes its powerlessness, since all power belongs to God, good." To recognize the evil activity of human will in one's life is an important step in individual redemption. A readiness to put that will aside and let the will of God be done is an even more important step in progress.
