CAUSATION AND SPIRITUAL LAW

From the September 1950 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In the first chapter of Genesis, which presents the true record of creation, we read, "God said, Let there be light: and there was light;" and it is added that "God saw the light, that it was good." In this creation of light no darkness appeared. God holds no darkness within Himself that could appear in His creation.

From the beginning, therefore, darkness —evil or matter—was excluded from God's universe of infinite good. Being infinite, this universe is without limits, is from everlasting unto everlasting, and ever-present Love illumines it with its fadeless light. It is not subject to mutations or disintegration, but exists forever in the changeless order of divine Science, or God's law. Throughout the infinite cycles of divine history it has lost nothing by subtraction and gained nothing by growth or accretion. Changeless cause could not produce a changeable effect. The Scriptures tell us (Eccl. 3:14), "Whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it." God's omnipotence can never be dethroned, nor His omnipresence displaced.

This radiant universe, in which there was "no night," appeared some nineteen hundred years ago to the spiritual consciousness of St. John as "a new heaven and a new earth" and in our time to the exalted vision of God's anointed, Mary Baker Eddy, as a holy habitation illumined by the light of divine Science. Our revered Leader portrays this spiritual creation in the following words in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 503): "Divine Science, the Word of God, saith to the darkness upon the face of error, 'God is All-in-all,' and the light of everpresent Love illumines the universe."
