Many desire to have their lives changed, transformed into a more satisfying and harmonious existence. Instinctively they reach out for freedom from fear and pettiness, for a wider range of action, for deeper affections, higher usefulness. Those who have felt the illumination of Spirit's presence know that no effort is too demanding, no price too high to pay, for the privilege of entering heaven's borders and helping others to do so.
Christian Science makes men aware of Spirit as the only true environment by lifting them above the consciousness of matter into the presence of divine reality. It interprets the Master's healings and his own resurrection and ascension as transformations of individual consciousness. It explains his precepts as instructions for awakening to the presence of a universe of good and a selfhood which is innocent of sin—the Father's son. Mary Baker Eddy says in "Unity of Good" (p. 17), "A right apprehension of the wonderful utterances of him who 'spake as never man spake,' would despoil error of its borrowed plumes, and transform the universe into a home of marvellous light,—'a consummation devoutly to be wished.'"
No matter how mundane one's life appears to be or how hedged about with restrictions, stultifying duties, or ill-health, the Christly, ministering touch of Science is able to transform it. If one were lost in the middle of a desert and cut off from all human aid, he could still transform his experience through the understanding of God as the source of his being and of man's function as unfolding his immortal Principle. This we see illustrated in the ancient record of Hagar, weeping in the wilderness, but finding the saving well of water when she opened her eyes at God's command (Gen. 21:16-19).
