At an early age I lost faith in the teachings of the religion in which I had been reared, and when led to read the Bible for the first time, I was so uplifted that I knew I had found the answer to my search for God. I suffered from chronic stomach trouble, which was accompanied by great debility, constipation, and a nervous condition pronounced by medical science inherited and incurable. A journey abroad in search of health, two surgical operations, and the best specialized medical care brought no relief.
At that time Christian Science was presented to me b a practitioner, and I commenced to study the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. Although I understood little of its contents, I knew I had found the truth; and from then on I became a consecrated student and active worker in a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.
My first healing was of neuralgic headaches after two treatments by a practitioner. The healing of the stomach trouble and nervous condition was slow; I suffered untold agony, but remained firm in faith and works. One day I prayed to God to show me what more I needed to do. I was led to open the textbook at page 272, and my eyes fell on the lines: "The spiritual sense of truth must be gained before Truth can be understood. This sense is assimilated only as we are honest, unselfish, loving, and meek." Right then I was awakened to the need for applying the truth as we are taught in Christian Science and for more alertness in my efforts to spiritualize my thinking. Had not Christ Jesus said (John 8:31,32), "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
