For nearly fifty years I wore glasses, due to a severe case of astigmatism. About ten years ago my sight began to grow steadily worse. I consulted two specialists, who said there was a cataract growing on each eye. I had new lenses made, but they did not help. Then I turned unreservedly to God, and with the help of a practitioner I began to understand that there was nothing to heal but my thinking.
Mrs. Eddy makes this clear in the following statement from Science and Health (p. 411): "Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body." And on page 377 she writes: "Remove the leading error or governing fear of this lower so-called mind, and you remove the cause of all disease as well as the morbid or excited action of any organ. You also remove in this way what are termed organic diseases as readily as functional difficulties." Gradually fear and worry were eliminated from my thought, and as my thinking cleared, the understanding of eyes as spiritual discernment, which Christian Science teaches—discernment which nothing can harm or interrupt— unfolded.
One morning while reading the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. I discovered that I was not wearing my glasses. To test my sight I hurriedly put them on and was overjoyed that I could see much better without them. Since that time I have done all my reading without glasses, and there has been no sign of eyestrain. Not only have my eyes been healed, with all evidence of cataracts removed, but divine Love has lifted my consciousness to a higher understanding of joyous living.
