The words of Jesus, "Seek, and ye shall find" (Matt. 7:7), have definitely proved themselves true in my experience. For many-years before coming to Christian Science I searched through numerous religious creeds and philosophies with a sincere love for religion, but with an unsatisfied sense of God. Finally, not finding anything which filled the longing to know God. I decided to belong to no denomination, but to accept any good I could find in any of the churches. At that time I was caring for our home and family, as my mother had passed on. Then a friend gave me a Christian Science Sentinel, which interested me, and later I borrowed the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I began to read in earnest. Very soon I knew my longing of the past years was being satisfied. I studied the Bible and Science and Health, but I had very little contact either with Christian Scientists or with the church at that time. My study was always with the thought of finding God and learning to think in the Christian Science way, but I had not thought of Science with regard to healing sickness.
Consequently the first healing I witnessed came as a surprise. My father, who was not interested in Christian Science, was suffering from a severe case of eczema on both legs. One morning he asked me to purchase some ointment. I bought it, and then the thought came to me, I wonder how this condition would be handled in Christian Science? Immediately, as though someone spoke, the words came, "A lamb without blemish" (I Pet. 1:19). I took that as my answer and turned to that statement every time the leg condition came to my thought.
A few days later I found that the ointment had not been touched, and that the whole condition had disappeared. I recognized the fact that it was a Christian Science healing, but at that time I did not understand the great spiritual truth those few words from the Bible contained—that man, as the reflection of God, has no spot or blemish of error.
