True law is God's law, the law of Love. Law that does not include love is not God's law, and we need not be afraid of it. Spurious material laws hold sway only so long as mankind is ignorant of God and of His all-inclusive authority. In God's law are to be found health, affluence, freedom, and immortality. Law is basic; that is why so much attention is given in Christian Science to the subject of law. Divine law is the expression of divine Principle, which regulates, sustains, and upholds the universe, including man. Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 307), "Man was not created from a material basis, nor bidden to obey material laws which Spirit never made; his province is in spiritual statutes, in the higher law of Mind."
The Psalmist wrote (Ps. 119:97), "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day." A Christian Scientist's attitude to law is one of absolute obedience to God's law and respect for the laws of the land. He is consequently law-abiding. He does not, however, bow down to false laws or tolerate injustices. He holds firmly to the fact that God's law of justice, equity, and love controls everyone in every situation; and thus understanding and relying on God's spiritual law, he is freed from everything unlike good, all that is unjust and restrictive.
An instance of this is the case of a young Christian Scientist, an infantry officer, wounded in battle, who found himself in a big base hospital where conditions were very difficult and congested. He longed for a more congenial atmosphere, where he could talk with a practitioner and have more time and opportunity to work out the problem in Christian Science. Military regulations and procedure, however, forbade his removal under the existing circumstances.
