"What," Pilate asked, "is truth?'" (John 18:38.) And through the centuries mankind continues to ponder the same query. Jesus could have answered the Roman governor, but Pilate did not wait for a reply. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, writes in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 223): "The question, 'What is Truth,' convulses the world. Many are ready to meet this inquiry with the assurance which comes of understanding; but more are blinded by their old illusions, and try to 'give it pause.'" In order to receive the answer, the honest seeker for Truth must think, listen, and thoughtfully consider. Reason, logic, and intelligence are always concomitants leading one to the light of Truth.
Christian Science declares that: Truth is the very nature of all that is real. In other words, Truth is the nature of God in His infinite allness. In her textbook Mrs. Eddy says (p. 504), "The rays of infinite Truth, when gathered into the focus of ideas, bring light instantaneously, whereas a thousand years of human doctrines, hypotheses, and vague conjectures emit no such effulgence." The answer to "What is Truth?" will be found in a study of this textbook, in an intelligent understanding of every synonym which our Leader gives for God.
Truth is Principle, the self-existent basis of all being. Truth is Life, Mind, Soul, Spirit; and, most important, Truth is Love. Truth, which is the natural condition of infinite Mind, Spirit, the eternal cause and origin of all being, is necessarily without beginning or end. Truth is continuous because Truth is the nature of the infinite, perpetual, uninterrupted Being. Intelligent observation acknowledges that the creative cause and its expression are infinite, and therefore are evidenced as Truth.
