While visiting in another state, I went to see a friend one afternoon and while there was seized with a most violent attack of illness. She read an article from a Christian Science Sentinel to me, and I was soon able to return to the home of friends, where I was staying. However, upon my arrival there, the attack returned with increased violence. I worked earnestly the rest of the afternoon and into the night; then it seemed wise to call a practitioner.
The next morning the practitioner came and remained with me for about an hour, and as she quietly and lovingly spoke to me of our heavenly Father and His loving care for each of us, I was reminded of what Mrs. Eddy says on page 306 of Science and Health regarding the undisturbed enthronement of Science and its unfoldment.
We prayed all that day and through the night. The next morning I seemed to be worse and unable to hold a copy of a Sentinel in my hand or to see the words on the page. The suggestions of mortal mind began arguing that the work done had been all in vain. This evidently awakened me to the necessity of an absolute stand, and I said aloud, "All right, even if I cannot hold the Sentinel or see to read the words on the page, I still know they are true." I realized that the devil, or error, could not use me to bring into this home any thought of loss or sorrow; that the Christian Science treatment which was being given me was loving, efficient, and effective; that I, as God's idea, was grateful, receptive, and responsive to good; that nothing was present or had power except God; and that His work could not be nullified or turned aside, but was accomplishing its purpose of healing.
