Mary Baker Eddy discovered the Science of being, the ultimate truths of God and man; and she reduced her discovery to a healing system whereby human beings are purified of sin and made healthy in mind and body. It was her understanding that the Principle of all being is infinite love, impartial and just, albeit divinely tender, that led her to see that the practice of Truth must be humane—must comfort and heal the race; that this Science must not merely add one more abstract theory to the history of men's worship, but must be a living, healing force that would interpret the nature and omnipotence of Deity.
Mrs. Eddy never separated her discovery from its healing ministry. She says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p.126). "I have set forth Christian Science and its application to the treatment of disease just as I have discovered them." Her system will remain unchanged until the last impulse of evil is destroyed and the nothingness of a mind that is not God is fully proved.
This system is flexible and is designed to fit the spiritual capabilities of all who seek to demonstrate Truth. Mrs. Eddy did not scorn an improved belief. She encouraged the development of faith in God and utilized faith as an element of healing power. She saw the possibility of instantaneous healing without a spoken or even a mental statement of Truth. But as a means for cultivating spiritual understanding, she developed a method of orderly, systematic argument, whereby specific claims of the carnal mind, so called, are dealt with by the utilization of equally specific spiritual truths.
