Perhaps no spiritual fact is more generally accepted than the ever-presence of God. The very acknowledgment of a Supreme Being implies His omnipresence. Yes, God is everywhere, and this means that He is round about us, that He is very near us, that He actually fills all space. And yet, in spite of this nearness, when all earthly remedies have failed to heal, when no material means remain to protect or to save, when human hope and happiness have fled and men have at last in utter helplessness turned to God for help, they have little known how to become conscious of His nearness and the availability of His saving power. They may have mentally cried out as did Job (23:3), "Oh that I knew where I might find him!"
To those who seek God's help in time of trouble it is vital to know how to become conscious of His immediate presence and how to lay hold on the help which it is conceded divine Love always makes available to us. Christian Science shows how this may be done. In our relationship with the divine it is evident that although God, divine Love, is very near, the difficulty in being conscious of that nearness in times of need is that God's thoughts and our thoughts are in the main, and with most of us, so far apart.
In times of great peril, men have admitted God's nearness and have testified that they have prayed to Him, talked with Him, and have been saved. Their prayers at such times have this in common with God's thoughts, namely, that they recognize, declare, and undertake to realize that God has power to save them and that divine law can overcome the most hopeless material conditions. Now it is evident that the more nearly our thought is in accord with God's thoughts, the more readily and completely is divine power laid hold upon and utilized! If God is near enough to save us in times of the most extreme need, it is evident that this same nearness can be relied upon at all times and for every need.
