THE CHRIST SPEAKS TO HUMAN CONSCIOUSNESS

From the August 1951 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God, through Christ, is continually imparting to humanity a message of love and healing. In the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mary Baker Eddy writes as follows (p. 332): "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. The Christ is incorporeal, spiritual,—yea, the divine image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses; the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and casting out evils, destroying sin, disease, and death."

It is with great gratitude that men and women in all walks of life are discovering that through the teachings of Christian Science they can learn how to listen to this divine message which speaks to the human consciousness and as a result of this listening find deliverance from sin and disease; in fact, from all the ills of the flesh. Jesus thoroughly understood the Christ, "the divine image and likeness," and demonstrated his understanding by healing the sick and the sinning and raising the dead. Human consciousness, which conceives man as made up not only of God-derived goodness but also of evil, he described in a parable as a "field" (Matt. 13:24). While good seeds which had been planted were growing there, tares, which had been surreptitiously sown by an enemy, also made their appearance.

Jesus knew that these tares of the field, or evils of human experience, were not of God and therefore had no power to enforce their claims that sin, disease, and death are part of man, whom God created in His own image. He also knew that the "message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness" was the Christ. Truth, that destroyed in God's own way the illusion of sin and sickness. The mental nature of evil as a foundationless belief in the absence of God was apparent to him.
