It is probable that many have paused in their daily round of duties to ask "What is life? What is the purpose of being? What can I do to find my fullest and best expression of life?" Christian Science answers the riddle of human existence in the words of Christ Jesus, who said (John 17:3), "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." Life, as he defined it, is the knowledge or understanding of God and of the ideal man, which Jesus demonstrated.
Knowledge involves information, apprehension, and conviction. To know "the only true God" and His creation, spiritual man, is the sum total of living. The more, therefore, we know of God and His qualities, or attributes, the better able we are to identify our true self. Man exists for the purpose of manifesting God, being the witness, or proof, that God is. A perfect creator, God, ensures a perfect creation.
The man that the physical senses represent as sinning, sick, material, impoverished, unhappy, and frustrated, and the universe that they picture as destructible, certainly do not express the only true God, the God whom Christ Jesus called Father. But Christian Science shows these pictures to be false; and it does this in fulfillment of prophecy by bringing all things to remembrance that have been told of God in the sacred writings. To understand God is to understand all, since He is All.
