Many years ago, when I was suffering from an extreme nervous condition, Christian Science was called to my attention by a fellow employee. I evinced enough interest to visit a practitioner and purchase a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. However, I was not ready to accept this wonderful truth and continued to depend upon physicians and material remedies. Several years later, when I was grieving over the passing of my father and suffering from a severe attack of lumbago, I again sought the help of a Christian Science practitioner and experienced a quick healing. At the practitioner's recommendation I began the daily study of the Lesson-Sermons as given in the Christian Science Quarterly and became a regular attendant at a branch church. I was well rewarded for this study by an instantaneous healing of influenza, which I wish to relate.
During an influenza epidemic in the community I was taken suddenly ill, while at work, with what appeared to be symptoms of this disease. I left for home early in the afternoon with a very high temperature and was in severe pain. I attempted to study and pray as we are taught in Christian Science, but did not seem able to think clearly. About eight o'clock that evening, when it appeared that we were unable to meet the situation alone, I asked my wife to telephone a Christian Science practitioner and request her help, which was lovingly given. A very short time after the work was taken up there came to my thought these words from page 47 of Science and Health: "God is everywhere, and nothing apart from Him is present or has power." I clung to this truth, realizing that if God, good, was ever present, He was with me there and then, and that there was no room for His opposite, disease or pain. Within a very few minutes I fell asleep and slept soundly all night. I arose next morning completely healed and was at my place of business at eight o'clock.
I have experienced many other healings in Christian Science, among them an instantaneous release from bondage to the smoking habit, although no specific work had been done by me to bring this about.
