When I arose one morning about four years ago I found difficulty in walking. One knee was greatly swollen and inflamed. I endeavored to know the truth about this situation, but for two days the condition remained about the same. One sleepless night these words of Mrs. Eddy's in Science and Health came to my thought (p. 420): "If students do not readily heal themselves, they should early call an experienced Christian Scientist to aid them. If they are unwilling to do this for themselves, they need only to know that error cannot produce this unnatural reluctance." I had been unwilling to follow this instruction. In the past thirty years I had been my own physician, and I felt that my understanding should be equal to meet the present situation. But I decided to be obedient to Mrs. Eddy's admonition and call for help in the morning. After I had made this decision a great sense of peace came over me, and I slept soundly until morning. When I awakened the difficulty had lessened to such an extent that I was able to walk about four blocks to church and serve in my usual place. I did not have to call for help, and by the next day the healing was complete. I am very grateful for the lesson I learned from this experience.
While at work one day I suddenly became very ill. Since it would be about two hours before I could leave for home, my uppermost thought was: If I could only go home! If I were only home! Then the thought came to me: What and where is home? If home is in spiritual consciousness, then man is there right now; he does not have to go anywhere. And if Truth is omnipotent and omnipresent, then man has all of Truth right where he is. While I was reasoning along these lines I suddenly realized that I was free. The error had disappeared.
Over thirty-two years ago I attended my first lecture on Christian Science. Afterward I purchased a copy of Science and Health, which the lecturer had mentioned in the course of his address. In reading the book from cover to cover I was healed of a rheumatic heart, facial neuralgia, and chronic sore throat. The healings have been permanent. I am sincerely grateful to our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, for her marvelous writings, in which we may find all we need to know concerning health and harmony and man's relation to his divine Principle, God.
