Many readers of The Christian Science Monitor are deeply impressed by the way the mission of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, is bring made known through advertisements appearing on The Home Forum page. They set forth different aspects of its purpose helpfully and healingly.
In one issue the advertisement was headed, "Is life subject to chance?" The word chance is traceable to a Latin word meaning a falling, especially of dice, over which the thrower has no control. It is often used in connection with unexpected experiences and accidents whose causes are unknown. The advertisement went on to say: "Life often seems insecure. Health, happiness, security are all too precarious for many, in spite of earnest and sincere efforts." Then the questions were asked: "Is there something to depend upon? Is there any Principle or law that is utterly reliable, and able to operate in humanity's behalf with kindness, and goodness, and intelligence?" And these queries were followed by the assurance: "Today Christian Science is providing the answer to these vital questions. Through the thoughtful study of the textbook of Christian Science, 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures' by Mary Baker Eddy, are found the answers that really satisfy and assure one."
Christian Science does this by enabling its students to see that accidents are due to mental unpreparedness, apathy, stagnation, or neglect to pray the prayers which result in the realization of the presence of divine Love. Such realization affords shelter from the storms and stresses and turbulence of mortal thought, its animosities and hatreds, its conflicts and false contacts, its aggressive mental suggestions.
