REASON AND SCIENCE

From the April 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The agnostic who has turned from religion, unsatisfied by the many and contradictory conceptions of Deity, finds in Christian Science a completely satisfying understanding of God. He finds a God whom he can intelligently love and worship. Divine Science unfolds to the student from a spiritual altitude, where logic and reason, where Science and Christianity, coincide. It does not demand a blind faith in an unknowable God. It sets forth an intelligent plan of salvation and points out the way of its achievement.

Christian Science is an intelligent religion, and a religion for the intelligent. With wisdom the author of Ecclesiastes wrote (7:25), "I applied mine heart to know, and to search, and to seek out wisdom, and the reason of things." And Job in his search for Truth declared (Job 13:3), "Surely I would speak to the Almighty, and I desire to reason with God." Christian Science is the demonstrable Science of Mind. It therefore makes its appeal to thought only. It demands thought. It requires thinking for its clear comprehension. Divine in its origin, it presents the only intelligent unfoldment whereby man's true identity can be discerned and demonstrated.

As one enters upon and continues in the study of Christian Science he discovers that mere belief does not make one a scientific thinker. He finds that he does not really know this Science and is not on a firm spiritual and mental basis until belief has been superseded by understanding. He also perceives the part that intelligent reason must play in his study of Christian Science in order that he may understand it.
