THE POWER OF THE WORD

From the April 1952 issue of The Christian Science Journal

In her Communion Hymn, to be found on page 75 of her book of poems, Mary Baker Eddy asks the question, "Felt ye the power of the Word?" This question is one which should be carefully considered and answered by all in the sweet secret place of communion with God. The conviction that the Word is all-powerful must eventually displace all belief in any force save that which comes from God.

Christ Jesus, understanding the full import of the impersonal Word, said (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." These words were spoken to a people whose country was under foreign domination. They were constantly looking for a Messiah who, they expected, would rescue them from their foes and reinstate their freedom. They did not recognize the Messiah in their midst, for he turned them away from all material personality to the Christ, Truth, which he embodied and demonstrated in his daily life. There was no mass salvation in the remedy he gave. The freedom which he taught was the freedom which physical force can never give or take away. It was the freedom which the Word, understood and demonstrated individually, brings to the individual and which ultimately must save humanity from its fears and its captivities.

It is interesting to note that the great victories recorded in the Bible were won through individual understanding of this great unseen power. This power or presence alone enabled Moses to lead the children of Israel out of bondage. In the book of Esther, in which the word God is not mentioned, the mighty power of the Word as understood by Mordecai and his niece Esther reversed the cruel decree formulated by the opponents of the Word of God and brought about the consequent destruction of evil and its malicious purposes.
